Briefly describe your reasons for wishing to join the academy:
As a doctoral candidate, I interact with individuals with aphasia both within and outside a laboratory setting. I have moderated a support group for individuals with aphasia and their caregivers, discussing the frustrations that they face and the ways in which they cope with the consequences of aphasia. Under the direction of my advisor Dr. Cynthia Thompson, I have gained valuable experience in behavioral and neuroimaging research methods. During my time as a doctoral student, I have developed a line of research focused on learning and memory in aphasia, with the long-term aim of advancing the rehabilitation of language in this clinical population. I wish to join the Academy of Aphasia to learn from other scientists who study the mechanisms of language and recovery in aphasia and to contribute discussion of my studies' findings. Associate membership in the academy would be highly beneficial for my research and career goals of furthering our knowledge of the neurocognitive mechanisms of learning and memory and how to exploit these mechanisms to promote recovery in people with language disorders. Thank you for your consideration.
