2018 Annual Meeting
Academy of Aphasia 56th Annual Meeting October 21-23rd, 2018
Montreal, Canada
The 56th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Aphasia will be held at Hotel Place d'Armes in Montreal, Canada (information on room rates for the meeting TBA). The Academy of Aphasia welcomes submissions of original experimental, clinical, theoretical, and historical research from any field that contributes to the study of aphasia, including Speech-Language Pathology, Psychology, Neurology, Neuroscience, Linguistics, History, and Computational Modeling.
Sunday Keynote Speaker
Our keynote speaker is Julie A. Fiez. Dr. Fiez got her B.A. from Emory University and her Ph.D in Neuroscience from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. She was a postdoctoral research associate in the Departments of Neurology at both the University of Iowa and Washington University. Currently, Dr. Fiez directs the Mind and Brain Lab at the University of Pittsburgh where she conducts research on the neural basis of language processing and basic learning systems in the human brain.
Keynote Abstract: How does the Cerebellum Interface with Cerebral Language Pathways?
The left cerebral cortex is thought to support a dorsal phonological and a ventral semantic processing pathway for language. This talk will discuss the functional connectivity of the cerebellum with these two processing pathways to form two functionally dissociable circuits involved in phonological coordination, lexical selection, and different aspects of print-sound integration.
Mentoring Program
Starting this year, a NIDCD sponsored R13 conference grant (R13 DC017375-01) awarded to the Academy of Aphasia brings experts/pioneers of specific approaches from a variety of scientific disciplines together with aphasia researchers at a common venue. In the first year our invited workshop is focused on fNIRS. Our speaker is Hellmuth Obrig, Max Planck Institute, Leipzig Germany. The title of the presentation is "Shedding light on language development by fNIRS. Perspectives for research in aphasia?"
