Amsterdam,
The Netherlands
October
23-25, 2005
Venue
The Academy of Aphasia conference will be held at the Koninklijke Nederlandse
Academy voor Wetenschappen (KNAW: Royal Dutch Academy of
Sciences). The KNAW is located in Het Trippenhuis, Kloveniersburgwal 29, in the
oldest part of the city. .
Trippenhuis
(KNAW)
Amsterdam
Amsterdam, the capital city of The Netherlands, is
relatively small, but, with a population of 800.000 people, the largest city in
The Netherlands. It was founded around 750 years ago, very close to the
conference site. The city centre is characterized by its canals and the
beautiful garbled houses. It is a very lively city, with two major universities
(the University of Amsterdam and the Free University).
Amsterdam is a small city: everything in the city
centre is within walking distance, at least to European standards. For example,
the Museum Quarter is only 20-30 minutes from the conference site, a lovely
walk, crossing all the canals and passing a street full of galleries and
antique shops.
Amsterdam has three large famous museums. The Van Gogh
museum, with many of Van GoghÕs paintings and drawings, but also work from his
contemporaries. The Rijksmuseum houses all famous Dutch painters from the
Golden Age: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Jan Steen and so on. Unfortunately, the
building is under renovation, but there is a very charming exhibition with the
most important Dutch works, which is absolutely worth a visit. The Stedelijk
Museum (Museum for Contemporary Art) is also under renovation and it is closed,
but the exhibitions are being held in an old post office, close to the
conference site, with a spectacular view over Amsterdam.
Rijksmuseum
Then there is, of course, the Anne Frank house, the
Hermitage at the Amstel, with art from its ÔmotherÕ in Saint Petersburg and the
Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) on the Dam, that has wonderful exhibitions. For those
who like to see the interior of the 17th-19th century
houses, there are three lovely museums: Onze lieve heer op Solder (Our dear
Lord in the attic: Oudezijds Voorburgwal 40) is only 5 minutes away from the
conference site. It is an old home with a secret catholic church in the attic.
Huize Van Loon (Keizersgracht 672) is a 17th century house,
originally decorated and Willet Holthuijsen (Heregracht 605) is a 19th
century house.
Getting around
Most places in Amsterdam are within walking distance
from the conference site. There are also some very nice places to visit outside
Amsterdam: Leiden and Delft (old cities, 30 and 50 km south of Amsterdam
respectively) and villages and old cities to the north: Volendam, Zaanse
Schans, Enkhuizen, Alkmaar. Very nice for a day trip. Most of the villages and
cities are easily reachable by a direct train.
Zaanse
Schans
Getting there
Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport is a large airport with
worldwide connections. There are at least four direct train connections to
Amsterdam Central Station every hour. From there you can walk (10-15 minutes)
to most of the hotels listed below. The conference site is only a 10 minute
walk. Alternatively you can take a taxi from either the airport (around 45
euro) or from Amsterdam Central Station (around 8 euro). Tipping is not
obligatory, but well-received (5-10%).
Amsterdam
Central Station
Being there
Amsterdam is a lovely city, easy going, safe and
relatively quiet. Nevertheless, I advise you not to walk around on your own
after midnight; in pairs or little groups is no problem. Also, be aware of pick
pockets. And remember: you are not supposed to order coffee in a Ôcoffee shopÕ. There are plenty of cheap and more
expensive restaurants in the city centre, too many to make a list. Have a look
at the menu, ask the local people at the Academy for advice. All services are
included in restaurantsÕ and hotelsÕ bills, but tipping is appreciated (around
5%). No need to tip when you are not satisfied.
Amsterdam has a beautiful concert hall, the famous Concertgebouw.
If you want to check the program, please have a look at: www.concertgebouw.nl. You have to book
tickets well in advance.
Opera and ballet are in the Muziektheater, also known
as the Stopera (from Ôstop the operaÕ a group that was against the plans for
this new opera in the 1970s). Very good performances, so book well in advance: www.hetmuziektheater.nl
There are many cinemas and all foreign films are in
their original language with subtitles.
